I was in a meeting last week, and I realized something that I didn't give much thought to before. Computers and tech are in my blood, in the early 80's my dad was coding, and I was right by his side as he tried to pass along as much info as my brain would take in without becoming overloaded. Not too long after the elementary school mentally gifted program I was in, made us work on computers and creatively explore and research different topics and made us think about what we could create and design on our own.
Bottom line some twenty-thirty years later, if I didn't do these things I would be very unhappy and like a fish out of water.
Some of you have the same experiences, you are trying to put a square peg in a round hole, and you are trying to figure out why you are not happy and why things are not coming together. There are things that you are naturally gifted and talented to do, and as long as you ignore them or try to be like someone else the more you will delay or destroy your progress. The more frustrated you will become.
There are people who need you, the gifted and talented you, that comes alive every time you talk about that thing you love and enjoy doing. There are part of you the comes alive every time you even think about it or talk about it. For instance, I had a meeting today with an inventor, man was he excited! You could of packaged his excitement and sold it! There are things that we love to do, and when we are doing them life has brand new meaning. We not only benefit from the experience, but we help others come alive They may not be easy to accomplish, but they have some amazing benefits. We just have to be willing to be honest with ourselves and accept who we are, and what comes in our package.
You are meant to serve a specific group, lets call them your tribe. They will love you, and you will enjoy spending time with them, and vice versa. When you are with them, there will be this incredible synergy and when you are with someone who doesn't belong you will know!
Don't be afraid to be exclusive!
There are stores where certain people shop and you will know right when you walk in that you either belong there or you don't. You will talk the same language, and you will feel at home as soon as you walk through the door if that is where you belong. For instance, if I went to a Star Trek conference I would be bored to tears, but at a Tech conference with gadgets I could get lost for hours. It's one of the greatest thing you will ever experience, because in that place, you are completely you. Exclusive doesn't have to be derogatory and actually, it's not. It can be a place where people just like you feel comfortable, where people can get what they need, and where it is packaged in a way they can understand it.
Your tribe is the same way.
There are people who you will meet who need what you and only can offer.
You are supposed to create a place where your voice can be heard, and a place where people like you can learn, share and grow. Perhaps you are creative, and you like to design beautiful artwork on mugs, or maybe you repurpose packages and turn those into items people can use so that our landfills aren't full of more junk. These are all unique places, but they are important, people need and appreciate being part of those communities and those places. Most of all, people are looking for them, and they can't find them. You may hold the formula that will help them birth their dream. They may have the same kinds of obstacles and conditions that you have overcome, and your story gives them hope.
Look over your life for clues.
What have you done, and how were you able to do it? This may seem like an odd question, but it may give you some ideas. What do you love and what do you feel passionate about? Is it music, fashion, creating, driving, drawing, organizing, etc? There is something that you love doing that other people would pay you to teach or do for them. What do you love talking about or sharing? These are indications of the things that may be opportunities for you to explore.
There are books like What Color is Your Parachute, and I Could Do Anything, If I only Knew What It Was, these may also be some great starting points for you to try and explore. If you think that you may know, don't be afraid to try and be wrong. Trial and error can be our biggest teacher. Those who fail the most often end up being those who are the first to succeed, because they are not willing to give up. Think about where you are trying to go, and remember all of these things are just part of the story. Care enough about yourself and those you have been called to serve to keep going until you reach your final destination. Someone with a story just like yours is waiting for you to speak!
