You've never flown a small plane before but you are on your way to your first ever flight lesson. How do you feel? Nervous, apprehensive and dare I say, excited!
Preparing to take-off in a new business venture may feel very much the same. You are bound to feel a little nervous because you are embarking on an unfamiliar journey, but once you get started you will feel the excitement kicking in. The adrenalin will begin to flow and if you are really passionate about what you want to do, then there will be nothing that can hold you back.
Taking to the sky in a small plane for the first time gives you a panoramic view that can be quite breathtaking and can give you a sense of control, your vision is vastly improved and you see things in a completely different perspective, obstacles below no longer seem so insurmountable.
This is exactly what you want to feel when you launch your new Small Business, and the thing that will help you have this feeling is having put together a detailed plan of just what your vision is. Being up high in a plane gives you an overall view of things below and a business plan gives you that perspective view of where you want your business to go.
Reach for a pen and paper and jot down your basic ideas of what you want to achieve, these only need to be rough notes, just to give you something to work on. Then assemble these notes into a logical order so that you can make up a list of topics you need to do research on. If you are thinking of offering a service you need to look at what is already on offer, if it is a physical product you need to look at what is already on the market.
Research is the key! Use the internet, look at websites that are already doing similar things and take notes of what you would like to use. Read any books or articles that give you an insight into your chosen subject and increase your knowledge and expertise so that you will have something positive to offer your customers.
When your initial researches are complete sit down and take a careful look at all the information you have acquired and try to assemble it into categories so that you can begin to put an action plan together. There will be different aspects of your business that you can assemble together, some parts you will need to deal with straight away and others you can attend to later.
Try to think ahead, that is something a pilot has to do when going out on a flight. For instance, what is the weather forecast! When you launch your business ask yourself, is this the right time of the year? Is the economic climate right? Am I starting off in the right direction?
Another very important consideration for any pilot on a trip is the fuel, have I enough to complete the distance? You might compare fuel in your business to money. Do I have sufficient funds available to finance the business, have I given attention to the cash-flow situation? All very important details, because running out of fuel in a plane will have disastrous consequences!
If you can just get all the planning done very carefully and have a complete flight plan in place before your business takes-off, you will be able to pilot your new Small Business like a Pro and build a successful future for yourself. You will need to be passionate about what you do and that passion will animate you, it will keep you alive and enthusiastic as you travel to your destination.
