Booklet Tips - Doing It Right - Not

You may know some details of my booklet story, and, no doubt, certain things stuck with you more than others. For instance, the thing that makes great copy is how many booklets have been sold (over a million) in four languages and various formats without spending a penny on advertising. Every word of that is completely true as stated, without the slightest embellishment.

However, you may not know these details:

* There was one typo in each of the first 50,000 copies sold.
* Month one unwittingly generated a $200 checking account bank fee.
* The first print run had no clean right angles on the cover trim.
* The next several print runs had streaky covers.
* Sales that fell through rarely were about price, content, or production.
* The first large-quantity sale did not include a shipping charge.
* The choice buyers had was "yes or no" - having only one product.
* Years later I learned the Spanish version was a mediocre translation.
* Every sale was a "one-night stand," with nothing to bundle or follow.

These are some of the many things I like to gingerly refer to as learning opportunities. And they are but a few of the highlights of the past 20+ years of being in the booklet business. While I constantly made my best effort to do things right, there were things I simply didn't know... yet. And they were costly lessons in time, money, or both in each and every case. Rest assured that none of the experiences in that list was repeated, ever!

It's not uncommon to hear booklet authors and would-be booklet authors express a desire to do a booklet the "right way." While there is now a trail that's been blazed in the past two decades about many things that work, please know there is no "right way," no one-size-fits-all. Your way will be, well, your way. It may look a bit like how others have done it.

Pieces of it will be the starting point for you. It will be unique, though.

The best and most important advice, like so many other things in life, is to just do it. You'll find your own successes and your own learning opportunities. And you'll find them because of who you are, how you live your life, who your connections are, where you have the willingness to explore, how you've structured your products and services format-wise and price-wise, and many other variables.

Thinking that there is a right way to do this (or lots of other things) is likely to keep you stuck in place, not moving forward, not sharing the best of what you've got and who you are with those who value your knowledge and point of view. While I encourage you to do the very best you can, did you notice that having a typo in the first 50,000 copies didn't stop things from
ultimately reaching well over a million copies sold? What are you waiting for?

ACTION - Start your (next) booklet today, using the basics of what makes sense to you, while considering guidance that's worked for others. Keep in mind that your journey will be unique to you and that your ideas have merit. You will find what's right for you.

Booklet Tips - So Much Free Available

Yes, there is a lot of free stuff available online, with more every day. And that free stuff serves some of the needs of some people some of the time. Is that stopping you in your tracks when you think about writing a tips booklet? Read on.

Consider this -- There are many folks who question the credibility of some/a lot of the free stuff especially on the Internet. Not only that, there are often times the free information is incomplete, requiring the seeker to look in multiple places online and offline to get a better idea of the entire picture in a given situation, still questioning how valid the answers are.

And there are people who prefer spending their time doing things other than surfing around the Internet on what can feel like a wild goose hunt, putting pieces together on their own, still feeling adrift on the big sea of way too much information in subject areas brand new to them. That's where you come in.

You and your booklet and related products and services are ideal sources for people looking for your expertise. You have created your place in the world as a go-to resource on your topic. Your products and services are complete, ready for delivery, and can be customized to best suit the needs of companies and organizations who want what you've got for their internal distribution and/or to use to promote their. That free stuff - not so much!

Even if the free stuff is valid and approachable and in a format that resonates with the seeker, it may not be ready to use in other ways that would be substantially more helpful.

Let's say a person is looking for a great assisted living place for their aging parent, and there are multiple decision makers in the family, plus the aging parent herself. Everyone is busy, so an online video clip means having to stay put and watch something. Besides, everyone may not have access to the technology or be physically able to see or hear or even know where to find good information.

Instead, a local assisted living residence has put together a booklet on generic tips to consider when looking for the best facility for you and your loved ones. The booklet travels easily so can be read a tip at a time whenever and wherever the person has a moment. It can be created in a large print version for people who are visually challenged. While the printed booklet requires no technology, it can also be made available as a downloadable PDF for those family members who prefer to read it on their computer, smart phone, tablet, or other device.

The information is coming from a reputable source who has a depth of experience and knowledge, who is using the booklet to educate future residents and their family, and as a marketing tool for their residence. Yes, you can find a free online list of things to consider when looking for the ideal assisted living facility. You can also receive the information free from an expert who is established and has more to offer beyond the free booklet.

ACTION - Create your booklet and other formats of related information products whether there is free online information available or not. Your credibility as an established expert counts for plenty when you approach associations and companies so they can use your products to help market their business. You can always provide a small taste for free. After that, there is a cost for convenience and credibility.
