The Importance Of Small Business Getting Online And Developing a Web Presence

It is extremely important for all business, big or small to have a web presence in these high-tech times of computers, tablets and smartphones. With all the technological advances that have happened over the last few years it is even more important to keep up with the times or you are going to be left behind.

Almost everybody has access to smartphones, tablets or computers these days and they no longer need to use bulky phone books to find businesses or services because they can search online, anytime or anywhere for any business, any service or any information they desire.

In the past whole communities have lost customers due to progress for example; Motorways have created ghost towns and put bustling shopping centers out of business, the only thing left for them to do was to move or go out of business.

If you are not online then your business is off the main drag and at best will only attract local customers and the occasional passerby.

Luckily moving online is not as complicated or as expensive as moving your business location to meet the motorway nor would it be as expensive, in fact it can be very inexpensive and quit simple to do with the right information and help.

If you have a small business and have looked at getting online you may have been overwhelmed by all the options you have as well you may know very little or nothing about the internet and websites or just don't have the time. It can be very daunting, time-consuming and confusing to get your business online.

There are hundreds even thousands of professional website services offering to build you a website and get you online, some even give you a free website, others charge a fortune and they all will get you online.

What they do not do is give you a web presence! That takes a bit more work.

Just having your business online is not good enough, how are your customers going to find you from possibly millions of other similar websites?

That is why you need to develop a web presence!

For a lot of businesses just a simple webpage or basic website can be enough providing contact details, basic information outlining what your business does and perhaps a picture or two. Other business might require something a little more advanced like an e-commerce website so they can sell directly.

At Web Start Business we do consulting work specializing in getting Australian small businesses online through helping you to understand how it all works and by developing a web presence for your business.
By listening to our customers needs we can formulate a plan that best suits your individual needs and budget.

Some Marketing Guidelines to Grow Your Small Business

Businesses cannot remain stagnant, but must continue to grow in order to maintain their position in the market industry. What are some of the considerations that small business must consider as they gaze ahead to the future? Marketing is a way of managing SMEs so that each critical business decision is made with full knowledge of the impact it will have on the customer. Internet marketing is the best to increase your company growth. You have a lot to take into consideration when deciding how to expend your marketing budget, but there are a few things to keep in the front of your mind:

Advertise your business online: Your aim is to let everyone know what you are offering, and why those offerings are better to what your competitors may be offering. If you are not advertising your small business online, you can guarantee at least one of your competitors is miles ahead of you. Millions of SMEs are already advertising online in some respect, and those businesses come from every imaginable market.

Make connection to local businesses: If you want to find out where people from your local area hang out and can be found, stay connected with them. It is also reasonably common for consumers to make connections with local businesses through the Internet. If someone down the street were looking online for products you can provide, would they be likely to find you efficiently and determine that you are their best option?

Email Marketing: After creating your product and building your website, the next thing you should do on priority is to start building a mailing list. 3 Key Factors That Make a Business Valuable

Intuitively the value of a business should reflect its attractiveness and the generation of profits or dividends for its owners.

The fundamental basis of valuation is that:

• The value of an asset today is the present value of the future cash flows that the asset is expected to provide its owners.

So the value of a business (the asset) is the present value of future cash flows (or "adjusted" net profits).

The typical methods used to assess the value of a business include:

• Earnings Multiple.

• Discounted Cash Flow Analysis.

• Asset or Book Value.

• Return on Invested Capital.

Ideally the valuation range should be arrived at using a number of these valuation methods, and the range should be as narrow as the assessment process allows.

The valuation should be performed with a typical buyer or range of buyers in mind. After all, it is the buyer that ultimately decides the value of your business. The value is never known until the buyer gives you a cheque and the funds have cleared in your account. Until this point the value can only ever be estimated within a certain range.

There are three major assessment criteria for assessing the business value. These are:

1. Is the business transferable?

2. What is the relevant cash flow that the buyer will get a benefit from?

3. How attractive is the business to other buyers?

Is the Business Transferable?

No one wants to buy a business that they can't operate. If it relies on the owner to bring in the customers, service them and manage the business, there is a big question as to whether it can be transferred to someone else.

Many professional services businesses exist because of the relationship with the owners. If these relationships cannot be transferred, there is little or no value in the business.

What is the Cash Flow?

Cash flow refers to the operating profit generated over and above any wages or salaries that should be paid to the owner. If the owner is working in the business, then they should receive a wage for their efforts. But the business should also generate a cash flow in addition to this wage.

The cash flow can be adjusted to remove the effects of one-off expenses or revenue or non-operating items.

The higher the cash flow, the higher the business valuation.

What influences the attractiveness of the business?

The attractiveness of a business is a combination of the profitability and the key factors that influence its financial performance. These key factors contribute towards the Earnings Multiple. If one business is more attractive than another similar business it will have a higher Earnings Multiple and hence a higher valuation.

Selection of the Earnings Multiple will depend on factors such as:

• Type of business, industry and location.

• Size and profitability.

• Attractiveness of business.

• Demand for this type of business.

• Perceived risk of the business.

• Efficiency of operations of the business.

Understanding the value of your business will allow you to develop plans to increase the value. An experienced professional can identify the key factors in your business that will increase its value and what actions you should take. Knowing the value of your business is the starting point to change it, and is not just for those buying or selling.

We have helped hundreds of business owners understand the value of their business and discover the actions that increase the value of the business.

Our Your Value NOW process gives a fast valuation of your business and highlights the 17 key saleready factors that you need to improve to increase the value of your business.

Voting for the Small Business

It is just around the corner, no, not the pharmacy, the national election. In fact, I just got back from early voting. There were a lot of voters and voting machines. The process was fairly painless. As a small business owner you have the right and the obligation to vote for the candidate who will help your business survive or at least will not create road blocks that cause you to stumble and fall.

I can't tell you which party or candidate or issue to vote for, or against, but you need to know that the persons you vote for, both nationally and locally, may be in a position that can help you or hinder you and your business. Different parties have different agendas, and depending on what kind of business you have, may make the difference in your long term success or failure.

Here are my suggestions:

· Study the issues - Find the issues that affect you and your business. Read about them from opposing sides of the argument. Learn how they could affect you over time.

· Investigate each candidate - Is this a trustworthy individual? How is their track record? Where do they come down on each issue that affects you?

· Visit with others - What are your employees saying about the issues and candidates? Is there a clear choice? Try discussing the issues and candidates with competitors and major customers. Maybe you are part of a trade association and that group has an opinion to think about.

· Make a decision - This can be the hard part. Sometimes it comes down to a gut feeling while you are standing in the polling both. Or it could be a cut and dry thing. Either way, you need to "make your mark" and "pull the lever" for the candidate and or proposition that favors your business and your livelihood.

Some elections are more important than others. If you live in a State that is "already decided" one way or another, certain votes might not be as important as others. Maybe a local issue, like a tax hike for the creation of a bond to spend your money, is more important this year than other issues and offices. If so, that is where you should spend your time and energy.

We are lucky in America to have the right to vote on so many different things and people. It is part of the reason we have been a leader in the world and have been able to keep going for so long. So this year and in future elections do your duty as a citizen and business owner and vote for the person who will help you and not get in your way. Good luck.

Use Business IT Systems for Better Performance

If you do not go for the best IT support systems for your business, you might run the risk of sacrificing the assets of your company. Your business is in need of security and this is where the business IT systems come in. The IT systems are the tools that are responsible for ensuring the perfect functioning of your backend support. If there is an outage, for instance, it will lead to a loss in terms of both time as well as revenue. This is the reason why you must make sure that there is protection at all levels.

Your business experiences a number of threats on a daily basis and this is why if you need to prevent your competition from acquiring the edge, you should be ahead of them and those competitors who are trying to sabotage your business. One of the dangers faced by your business is email spoofing. These are emails that display the sender as others instead of the original sender. This is on account of illegal reasons. For example, one of the legitimate reasons for a spoofing email id could be replying to your business mail from a personal mailbox. The same method can be used to spamming and the email scams.

A bad example of spoofing can be the result of stealing details from your PC pertaining to clients. Malicious software is another reason. You can run without security due to the presence of malware including spyware as well as adware programs which monitor your activities on your PC. It also tracks your surfing trends. Malicious adware can be bad for the growth of your business and this is why you need the IT network support in place to help you out. You should secure your passwords, credit card numbers as well as bank account numbers.

If there is a virus in your system, it will multiply and be spread through the system. At times, even before they are discovered the damage is done. They can spread to a great extent and bring the system to a halt, thereby disrupting your daily activities. This will lead to a disabling of all kinds of activities and communication which is so vital for business operations. You need to ensure the maximum protection with the help of the business IT systems. It is better to prevent the problem than trying to fix it later on once the system has been affected.

Filter all your emails to ensure that there is no damage of content in your email accounts. These are the commonest target points for spamming activities and hence you ought to ensure the best possible protection.

By having the best business IT systems in place, you can prevent unwanted attacks and hence preserve the safety of your business. Find the best IT Support Sheffield by visiting Sheffield-systems.co.uk

What Small Business Owners Need to Know About Technology - Part 1

I feel that I have to write this. I love small business and I am passionate about helping entrepreneurs succeed and grow their business. As a business owner, I understand how much blood, sweat and tears people put into making their business a success. It pains me to see just how close some of these businesses are to a complete technology disaster and the business owners have no idea. I have seen it work a couple of ways. The business owner has a friend that can spell "PC", no budget for technology, bad advice, internal staff gets burdened with IT Support, or the business owners assume that everything is OK with the technology systems. Whatever the situation is, I see it all the time. The company is on the brink of a disaster and the business owners have no idea. Well, that is why I am going to write this blog series. I want to provide business owners with simple to ask questions, things to look for, items to review and some simple technology advise presented in a non-technical way.

In part 1 of this series, let's start at the edge of your company's computer network. In most cases your company is going to have some type of connection to the internet. Most companies will have a DSL line, T1, cable, or some other type of high speed internet access. As a business owner, you need to understand what type of connectivity you have, and make sure it is the correct fit for your business. This will depend greatly on the number of employees that you have and how much your employees are online. If you feel your internet access is slow, then I recommend that you look at adding a cable to your existing internet connection.

Cable is a very inexpensive way, typically around $100-$120, to add high speed internet to your office. For a lot of our clients, we leave the existing T1 connection in place for the reliability, and add a cable modem for speed. A great way to understand internet speed is to think of it as a lead pipe. The larger the pipe the faster your internet speeds will be. A T1 is going to be around 1.5 inch pipe and cable is going to be between a 20 and 50 inch pipe. So you might be asking yourself, if you are paying $400 -$500 for a T1 and cable cost $100-$120, why do I need the T1? The answer will vary, but in most cases your telephone service probably runs over the T1 as well as your Internet connectivity. Plus, the reliability of cable is not as good as a commercial grade T1 circuit.

So, find out what type of connectivity your office has. Review your contracts with your providers. Prices for these services continue to decrease, so if you have a contract that is 2, 3 or 4 years old, chances are you can renew it at a cheaper rate.

If you have questions about your internet connectivity, please ask. In our next post in this series, we will take about Firewalls. We'll explain what they are and why you need a good one.

Until next time,

Change Your Mind and Change Your Business

In many respects, systemising your business begins with a shift in mindset. That is, taking a step back from your business, and looking at your business from an outside in approach, or an elevated looking down approach.

What this means is that if you are to get back more time in your workday and you want to stop your business sucking the life out of you, you absolutely must know what your high value and strategic activities are, versus your low value but important activities.

High value strategic activities are the money generating and profit getting activities that you must do if your business is to be successful.

Low value, but important activities are those that must be done to keep your business ticking over. The benefit of this exercise is that you are creating a picture of what your role "should" look like in your business.

You are creating the "End State" of what you should be doing in your business. You then have a start point (where you are now and all the routine tasks and activities that you are currently doing) and an end point (where you need to be for your business to thrive so that you have more time and more fun doing what you set out to do)

Clearly knowing the distinction between high value and low value work will allow you to objectively see where your time is currently being spent in relation to where it actually needs to be spent. From here, it can often be easier to make the shift from "this is what I need to do each day in my business to keep it going", to "this is what I should do in my business each day to make it the business I always wanted".

Once you know what you should be doing and the results and benefits it will bring, it becomes much easier to let go of the things that are weighing you down, the things you don't want to be doing anymore and the things that are just no fun.

So, to start to free up your time, the first thing you need to do is work out what your high value strategic activities are - what are the things that only you can do that will determine the success or failure of your business.

Next, identify all the low value activities you are currently doing and honestly ask yourself "If I had a step by step procedure on how to do this, and I could clearly state my expectations around this task, could it be done by someone else"

If the answer is "Yes", then it needs to be off your plate. You need to document it as soon as possible. Once you have it documented, that task is able to be performed by someone else, freeing up your time to focus on the high value strategic work you identified in step one.

The wrap up: Even if your business is just you at the moment, it is never too early to start identifying what your high value strategic activities are versus where you are currently investing your time on low value but important work.

The key is to invest your time in your business in a way that is meaningful to you and produces tangible results and outcomes. Choosing where to invest your time becomes so much easier when you have procedures for your routine tasks and activities because it means you just need to oversee these instead of actually do them.

Clear expectations around these tasks and activities and communicating these to the person performing them, along with the documented procedure will contribute to topping up your time tank and give you more capacity for working as the owner of your business rather than an employee of your business.

The Difference Between Creating or Developing a Business Online

Many tend to approach the idea of developing a business online with the thoughts that their efforts will be quickly rewarded! Actually this is true when creating businesses simply because building websites or blog takes very little time! However when you're looking to actually develop something that will turn a profit both time and patience will be needed, and in great abundance! While the creative process requires less discipline and is more fun, the development process involves a great deal of problem solving and decision making! Does that sound fun to you?

Let's break down 3 significant difference you'll find between creating businesses quickly or developing something that will actually turn a profit!

Time Invested

The creation process involves simply establishing an online presence while the development stages of most businesses requires building relationships, credibility and trust! Obviously the developmental process calls for time and patience for it to be successful while the creation process happens much more quickly! Although the 'instant gratification' of literally slapping up a website or blog is appealing it will NOT in most cases turn a profit for you!

Creativity vs. 'Grunt' Work

Creating websites or blogs can be a lot more fun and exciting to do compared to the more detail oriented 'grunt' work involved in trying to turn a profit! The development of any type of online business will almost in every case consist of much problem solving and decision making and both can be stressful! The fact is this is why so many tend to 'wash out' in their efforts to earn an income online!

The Bottom Line

Businesses that actually turn a profit are ones that have been tested, and tweaked with much attention paid to detail! Creation places more emphasis on appearance insofar as design goes and merely establishes a 'potential' means for you to earn an income! The bottom line is one approach does nothing more than to simply take up a bit of internet real estate, while the other can actually pay the bills! What bottom line are you looking to achieve?

Many mistake the difference between developing a business online and merely creating a presence by building a website or blog! This results in their disappointment and sometimes them even giving up when their efforts don't turn a profit! The point here is without realistic expectations and the willingness to invest the time and patience needed you can't expect to succeed working online! The 3 difference discussed above between the creation or the development of any internet businesses are fairly clear! In order to really turn a profit online you must be receptive to the fact that problem solving and decision making will most definitely be a significant part of the process!

Office Supplies For The Proper Operation Of Business

Office supplies, also known as office equipment, are the materials that are required in the office area for the purpose of proper operation of businesses. It comprises all the equipment that is needed to conduct an office. In this article, I am going to discuss about the significance of office supplies.

It is the responsibility of a company to supply different office equipment to its employees for ensuring better efficiency. Office supplies consist of all the necessary things that are useful for different purposes in offices. There is a large number of equipment used in offices. It comprises of both small and large items. Among small items, the commonly used things are paper clips, staples, pen, ink-pot, envelops, small pages, different small devices such as punchers, staplers, laminators, scanners and more.

The large items include the supplies such as printers, desktop and laptop computers, fax machines, photocopy machines, money counters, various desks similar to steel desks, solid wood desks, cup desks, chairs, shelves, racks and many more. All the mentioned items, whether small or large, are very essential for a wide variety of purposes.

Nowadays, computers and its peripherals are the most vital supplies. To keep pace with modern technology, computer and internet connection are must haves in an organization. These two things are very significant equipment utilized in modern information system. Businesses often need to use scanners and fax machines for executing urgent office tasks.

Even though we can use computers for printing purposes, we still need the basic supplies such as pen, pencil, and erasers. Computer software is also considered as a part of office supplies. Different operating systems, anti-viruses, typing software, PDF reader, web browser, and different audio and video players are very useful computer related applications required for office.

Choosing the right office supplies is an important thing that should be taken care of by the companies. A company should determine the different equipment for office in a very technical way. The supplies that are used daily must be available in the offices, but the equipment that is required rarely does not necessarily have to be present.

It is sometimes seen that some people consider office supplies and office expenses as the same things. However, this is not entirely true, as in the tax forms these two terms are recorded into different classes. Office expenses are costs that are linked directly to the general action of the company and for this reason office expenses are also termed as office operating costs. Office expenses consist of housing fare, internet bill, postal fees, cost of operating office equipment and more.

The efficiency of the employers largely depends on the quality of office supplies. If the quality of the supplies is good then the employees will find it easy to accomplish the tasks. Hence, the administrators should stress on providing quality office equipment. It is really good news for the developing businesses that a lot of organizations offer top quality office supplies at competitive rates. You can order your office supplies online with just a few clicks of the mouse.

Want Small Business Success? Understand Your State's Competitiveness

There's lots of competition for funding, talent, and customers. Business leaders have to create vision, execute strategy, and deliver high quality products and services at the best price and lowest cost available.

With all of those challenges, it's important to understand the competitive position of the state in which you do business. Understanding what's happening in the state will help you guide your business through any situation.

From a state competitiveness perspective, here's what to look for:

1. Economic Climate - cost of doing business and overall state economy

2. Regulatory / Tax Environment - how tax and regs impact business

3. Employment Climate - workers comp costs, unemployment, insurance, etc.

4. Education / Worker Training - college and career prep

5. Quality of Life - how health and well-being ranks against other states

6. Infrastructure - condition of roads, bridges, etc.

7. Govt Policy - government spending and debt levels

Your state might score high or low on several of those factors. The key is to make sure you understand the true climate within the state, and build enough agility in your business to take advantage of those factors that are in your favor.

Let's dig a little deeper on economic climate, and understand the primary pieces.

1. Cost of doing business - wages, taxes, utilities, and real estate (purchase and lease)

2. Cost of living - food, utilities, transportation, and housing are the primary components

3. Income / Poverty - per capita income and poverty rates tell consumer spending capabilities

4. Exports - defines state production of various products - consumer, industrial, chemicals, etc.

5. Economic Growth - state gdp

6. Unemployment Rate - where is your state positioned versus others?

7. Business Incubation - venture capital, employer start-ups

8. Economic Mobility - are residents moving up, down or sideways economically?

9. Energy Costs - electric, natural gas, water costs

It's a rewarding and interesting exercise to study and understand where you state falls against others. If your small business has an opportunity for expansion outside the current state in which you do business, make sure you study these critical success factors.

Make sure to incorporate this analysis into your strategic planning, too. Not only can conditions within your state improve or worsen in a very short period of time, but your business must be equipped to respond quickly to these macro changes.

Why Surveys Are a Great Tool to Help Your Spa Business Grow

Great salons and spas give their clients exactly what they need. To find out what your clients need, you have to get the inside scoop on them.

How do great spas and salons get the insider info? They use surveys! Survey clientele to collect feedback on your staff, your services and what else you can do to wow the client. Follow these do's and don'ts to make your surveys a success.

• Don't bombard your client list with surveys all of the time. Quarterly is enough. Try mixing up which clients are surveyed. Send to them your regulars one quarter and clients you rarely see the next. Clients who haven't used your services in a while will give great feedback about why they haven't come back.

• Do keep your survey short and sweet. It should take less than 5 minutes to complete. If you want to do a longer survey, give something in return. A free service, product or a discount on a future service are appropriate if you want to do an in-depth survey.

• Don't ask for too much personal information. You'll get more honest feedback if it's anonymous. Give the survey respondent the option of giving her contact info so you can follow up on negative feedback. Follow up right away and do what you can to make it right.

• Do try different formats. See what your response rate is if you use an online survey versus a comment card. Use a free online survey tools, such as surverymonkey and zoomerang and send the link to you email list. Another option is to have comment cards available at the reception desk. Train your reception staff to offer comment cards to all your clients.

• Do use surveys targeted at different client segments. Ask clients about a specific service they received rather than general questions. Targeted feedback will be more helpful than general information.

• Don't ask too many open-ended questions. Instead, use multiple choice questions and give them the option to offer comments. Clients are more likely to respond if they have the option of answering multiple choice questions.

Clients like to give feedback and share their opinions. Invite them to tell you about their experiences. Openly accepting feedback assures them that you value their opinions and care about their experience with your spa or salon. You'll learn from the negative feedback and the praise feels great.

Use surveys as a regular part of your marketing so you know how to grow. Use the feedback to make changes and add services. If you're thinking about adding a service, survey you clients before you invest. You may find out you would do better investing elsewhere. If a service is lagging in sales, survey clients to find out why. The information you gather using client surveys will be critical to your growth.

Forecasting - A Tool for Small Business Success

Putting together a budget has left me feeling both satisfied and empty. When I was wearing my finance hat, I enjoyed seeing how all parts of the organization were putting together strategies and action plans to accomplish goals that would help grow the business.

The other positive was that as a finance team, we had a tangible output - a budget. We consolidated all the inputs from other departments, asked questions, challenged assumptions, performed what-if analysis, and put together a pretty package that was sent to the executive teams and department heads.

After the "high" of completing the budget, reality soon set in. In working with colleagues from other departments, I could see the budget package on a shelf, under a stack of papers, and in some cases, the budget wasn't to be found. Talk about a cold dose of reality.

Budgets will always have a place in business, but to increase their effectiveness, you have to incorporate forecasting into your business planning. The forecast helps take into consideration the changes that are happening in the business right now and those you expect to happen very soon.

A budget is static, and serves as a baseline. The forecast is evergreen - it changes each time you take a look at conditions, and provides you with the ability to make small gains in your business, hit a homerun, or protect your current position.

In volatile times, forecasting is an essential tool. Pull together your sales, marketing, and service and operations team. Ask them to take a look at the market, and analyze and develop a 4 quarter or 12 month rolling forecast. When you do this, you can optimize your investments, and pare back those that just won't cut it in the current market.

Along with the sales piece, review the expenses. When people have a budget, many will spend to the budget. It's human nature. Have your department heads or key leaders reevaluate their spending, and tie it back to the new direction that the forecast is dictating.

Budgeting is a baseline. From the CFO chair, it will always have a place in business. Drive innovation and resource optimization, you MUST do the forecast. Forecasting leads to agility - being quick on your feet to respond to threats, and take advantage of the opportunities that are right there.

With your business and the economy in a constant state of fluctuation, can you really afford to rely solely upon a static budget?

Prepare for Take-Off - Pilot Your Own Small Business Like a Pro!

You've never flown a small plane before but you are on your way to your first ever flight lesson. How do you feel? Nervous, apprehensive and dare I say, excited!

Preparing to take-off in a new business venture may feel very much the same. You are bound to feel a little nervous because you are embarking on an unfamiliar journey, but once you get started you will feel the excitement kicking in. The adrenalin will begin to flow and if you are really passionate about what you want to do, then there will be nothing that can hold you back.

Taking to the sky in a small plane for the first time gives you a panoramic view that can be quite breathtaking and can give you a sense of control, your vision is vastly improved and you see things in a completely different perspective, obstacles below no longer seem so insurmountable.

This is exactly what you want to feel when you launch your new Small Business, and the thing that will help you have this feeling is having put together a detailed plan of just what your vision is. Being up high in a plane gives you an overall view of things below and a business plan gives you that perspective view of where you want your business to go.

Reach for a pen and paper and jot down your basic ideas of what you want to achieve, these only need to be rough notes, just to give you something to work on. Then assemble these notes into a logical order so that you can make up a list of topics you need to do research on. If you are thinking of offering a service you need to look at what is already on offer, if it is a physical product you need to look at what is already on the market.

Research is the key! Use the internet, look at websites that are already doing similar things and take notes of what you would like to use. Read any books or articles that give you an insight into your chosen subject and increase your knowledge and expertise so that you will have something positive to offer your customers.

When your initial researches are complete sit down and take a careful look at all the information you have acquired and try to assemble it into categories so that you can begin to put an action plan together. There will be different aspects of your business that you can assemble together, some parts you will need to deal with straight away and others you can attend to later.

Try to think ahead, that is something a pilot has to do when going out on a flight. For instance, what is the weather forecast! When you launch your business ask yourself, is this the right time of the year? Is the economic climate right? Am I starting off in the right direction?

Another very important consideration for any pilot on a trip is the fuel, have I enough to complete the distance? You might compare fuel in your business to money. Do I have sufficient funds available to finance the business, have I given attention to the cash-flow situation? All very important details, because running out of fuel in a plane will have disastrous consequences!

If you can just get all the planning done very carefully and have a complete flight plan in place before your business takes-off, you will be able to pilot your new Small Business like a Pro and build a successful future for yourself. You will need to be passionate about what you do and that passion will animate you, it will keep you alive and enthusiastic as you travel to your destination.

How to Start a Beef Jerky Business

Starting a beef jerky business can be as easy as making jerky in your kitchen and selling it at a local farmers market. But it also can be tough to find success and earn a good living at it.

Here are some tips to help you see more clearly what to expect...

1. Government Inspection - By law, if you make beef jerky for the purpose of selling it, your production facility must be state or federally inspected. If you plan to sell your jerky in the same state as it was produced, you only need state inspection. If you plan to sell to consumers in other states, you need federal inspection.

Getting inspected is not so much the bigger challenge, as it is maintaining inspection. A state or federal inspector is going to visit your facility everyday.

However, many small "mom and pop" run beef jerky businesses don't bother getting inspection, and seem to never run into any trouble. They make all their jerky at home, in their kitchen, and sell it wherever they can. Both state and federal government inspectors don't bother looking for violators, the issue only seems to come up when consumers get sick and file complaints.

2. Private Labeling - To get around the state and federal inspection requirements, most small businesses hire an inspected and approved meat processing facility to make jerky for them. The facility can make jerky based on your recipe or use their own house recipe. They can even source beef specifically to your requirements, or use their own. The facility will then package the jerky with your label on it.

The problem that most entrepreneurs find when they hire a facility is that the jerky never comes out with the same flavor and consistency as it did when they made it themselves in their own kitchen. The answer is to try several facilities and find one that will produce something closest to what you're looking for.

Do a Google search on the words, "USDA Establishment Number" to find a list of federally inspected meat processing facilities.

3. Preservatives or No? - Most consumers tend to stay away from foods containing preservatives, artificial flavors, and fillers. Sodium nitrite is a common preservative in beef jerky, and there have been studies suggesting that it causes cancer, though there have been other studies disputing it.

The problem for manufacturers and retailers is that beef jerky must be able to sit on store shelves for several months to retain freshness. To do this, is has to contain preservatives. Most distributors and retailers won't even consider stocking a jerky that can't guarantee freshness for more than a few weeks.

So, the trick for a small, upstart beef jerky company, if they want to avoid preservatives, is to find markets where long shelf life is not an issue. Selling jerky at farmers markets, street fairs, and trade shows is common. Selling jerky online from a website is very popular. Some manufacturers have arrangements with smaller stores to come in once a week to buy back old stock and replace with fresh.

4. Distributors - The jerky brands you see in convenience stores and grocery stores were placed there by distribution companies. Names like Core Mark, Sysco, and US Foods represent the largest distributors in the United States and are responsible for filling the store shelves of all the national retail outlets. You can't just talk to a national retail chain and get them to stock your jerky, you have to go through a distributor. And the way things are in the 21st Century, distributors are unwilling to talk to small, upstart brands.

You can instead talk to smaller, niche distributors, and/or small non-chain grocers. Look for those that focus on natural foods. Small independent health food stores in your area are willing to buy jerky from local producers because of their desire to stock "locally grown and sourced" foods, provided it doesn't contain preservatives.

To get the larger distributors to take notice of your brand, you have to build up the name recognition of that brand across the country. That means a lot of social media, a lot of sponsorships, getting mentioned on television and radio, etc.

5. Don't Partner - Starting a beef jerky business from the ground up is a lot of hard work. It takes years of dedication just to build up a loyal customer base, and even then you'll find that your life all but revolves around your business. Your business is going to become your life.

If you have a partner, other than a spouse, often times you'll find your partner becomes your enemy. Even if it's your brother, your best friend, or your mother. You'll always find that your partner is not doing their job, or is telling you how to do your job. It'll seem like your partner is not working hard enough, but is still getting half of the profits. You might find that your partner is working harder than you, and you may feel guilty about not doing your part.

If you need a business partner, talk to your spouse, and have him or her get on board with starting a beef jerky business. If you can't find a partner, and you believe you need one, then maybe it's not the right time to start. Otherwise, take a deep breath, clear your mind, and be prepared to do it all yourself.

The rewards are greater that way.

Ways to Strengthen Your Business and Effectively Manage Your Business Funding

With the current situation of the economy, more and more entrepreneurs are starting to focus on how they can strengthen their companies and successfully manage their business funding. In recent years, business owners started use various gauges such as return on investment, operating income, and economic value to evaluate and appraise the status of the company. Despite these, however, the question on whether or not these gauges will really provide an objective assessment of the company remains.

The use of these financial measures is important in every business. However, it should be noted that in order to get a better picture of the business, one must also use metrics that are not focused on the financial aspects of the organization.

One of the ways to put together a better picture of the company is by using a Balanced Scorecard which utilizes the right combination of financial and non-financial gauges.

In a nutshell, the Balanced Scorecard refers to a system that attempts to provide the company owners with an accurate status of the organization. It uses a variety of financial and non-financial metrics that gauges the performance of the company. These include:

1. The financial component which measures the cost reduction, revenue growth, and investment returns of the company;

2. The customer component which looks into the market share, loyalty of customers as well as their satisfaction and profitability;

3. The Internal Business Process which tries to find effective methods for the company that will lead to an efficient way to meet its goals; and

4. The learning and growth component that focuses on skills and training of employees, knowledge on information technology and the efficiency of processes concerning administration.

Initially, looking at these components may appear overwhelming. But since the Balanced Scorecard is only meant to cover those gauges that show the company's strategy, the reality is that it is far simpler. Instead of using every measure that is available, those who are tasked to develop a particular scorecard should limit their list with those that look into the fulfillment of the company's vision, goals and objectives. Thus, one is expected to first create or find a specific strategy that he or she wants to measure.

Using a Balanced Scorecard system will maximize a company's efficiency not only in managing business funding but also in strengthening the entire organization. Because it seeks to measure the progress of the company towards its objectives, the Balanced Scorecard will give entrepreneurs an opportunity to align the business into its targets. This solves one of the most common problems in the field - the tendency for some companies to develop a strategy and then forget about it for years.

In case you are still wondering how you can start with the formulation of your own Balanced Scorecard, here are five steps that you'd want to try:

1. Experiment first on a single business unit before adopting it to the entire organization;

2. Hire a professional who can help you and your officials in the creation of a Balanced Scorecard;

3. Keep in mind the company's strategy, objectives, and goals that you want to measure;

4. Get feedback from other departments as regards your measures and its corresponding objectives; and

5. Assign a group of individuals who will focus on the creation of the process that will measure the health of your organization.

Since the sign of your business can be so crucial and important, it is not an area worth sacrificing.
