Steps to Becoming A Real Success Story

The Definition of success is: The achievement of something, desired, planned or attempted. So in a nut shell just means anything that you are trying to do or be, whether it be starting your own business, making more money, writing a book, etc. Once you achieve the life that you have envisioned in your mind, that is what makes you successful.

Eric Thomas, "world known" motivational speaker's video went viral. He said if you want success as bad as you want to breathe, then you will be successful. Wow I'm sure everyone wants to breathe so really what are the steps to become a real success story? People are yearning and wanting success. We all want to make more money, or have more than we already have right now. But how bad do we really want it? How do we really become a real success story.

The steps to becoming a real success story are not always simple as one may think. If so everyone would be a success story, everyone would be making more money, or everyone would be starting their own business, etc. But if you want it as bad as you want to breathe success will not only come but will change your life to ways that you never saw before. There are 5 magical steps that will help your produce true success.

1. Find your purpose ~ Find your purpose and true happiness will come. We were all created with a thought in mind and with a true purpose. Finding your purpose will help you live longer and grow stronger. What if we were sitting in a chair expecting it to ride us down the street like a car would. It wouldn't work would it? That's because it's not the purpose of the chair to take us here or there. Find your purpose and the success you yearn for will push you to becoming a real success story.

2. Write the Vision ~ Writing the vision is the 2nd step to becoming a real success story. The bible says in Habakkuk 2:2, 3 to write the vision and make it plain, and yes it may tary but no matter what or how crazy life may get it will TRULY come. In a nutshell it just says that your dreams and vision will come to life. Writing the vision is another word for setting goals for yourself and seeing who you will become and be and what your real live success story will look like.

3. Be willing to Fail ~ All real success stories are full of failure stories. Oh yes all successful people failed at one time or another. The Michael Jordans, Donald Trumps, and Les Browns of the world were all willing to fail. They just didn't quit. The continued to try over and over again until they become a real success story.

4. Surround yourself with other real success stories ~ Yes the bible says to be thou unequally yoked with unbelievers. That just means continue to surround yourself around like-minded people. If you want to be a real success story, then surround yourself with other people who live, breathe and produce success.

5. Be a positive thinker ~ All people who are a real success continued to believe that they could do anything possible than they believed. Even when the chips were down and negative things happened they still believed that they would be a success no matter what the results.

People who are a s just do things differently and proceed to win no matter what. Want to be a real success story just do it and make it happen no matter what.

The Value of Employee Involvement in Achieving Success

The recession has led to a re-examination of what creates business success and one important factor to emerge is that 'good work' can be at the heart of good performance and is as vital to the small and medium-sized enterprise as to any corporate because a highly competitive global market applies to all. You need to be prepared for life after recession; to be ready to make the most of it; to be in the front line of your particular area of expertise.

In his "Key Speech" in 1955, Ove Arup spelt out the importance to business success of motivating your employees. To quote: "There are two ways of looking at the work you do to earn a living: One is... Work is a necessary evil... The other is: To make your work interesting and rewarding. You enjoy both your work and your leisure. We opt uncompromisingly for the second way."

Ove Arup established a world-wide company and this fact just emphasises the strength of his argument; his principles apply equally to smaller enterprises. Indeed, it is probably easier to implement these principles when you have a relatively small workforce. His point is that you need to inspire your employees to feel important and valuable, but you cannot just assume you know what makes them feel that way. You need to make the effort to find out and then collaborate with them to achieve those results. Done properly, it will be time well spent and you will find the enterprise of which you are head has the motivation to surge forward and ahead of competitors.

Surveys referred to in "Good Work in our Times" published by The Work Foundation illustrate that, for employees, a list of priorities is not always topped by wages and bonuses. High on the list are trust and integrity, pride in the job, career growth opportunities and employee development.

Young people have grown up with technology and are unphased by that particular aspect of modern business; they like team working; flexible working; place high value on learning opportunities and are very environmentally conscious. Through Facebook and Twitter, they can make comparisons of work experience across a wide area so your success or failure could be advertised - it would therefore be wise to have your employees singing your praises!

So if you build trust and mutual respect; keep your staff involved in developing policies; establish early discussion of any potential problems; allow them to enjoy the satisfaction expressed by clients when their efforts are successful - they will be a potent force for helping you to achieve success.

Want Small Business Success? Understand Your State's Competitiveness

There's lots of competition for funding, talent, and customers. Business leaders have to create vision, execute strategy, and deliver high quality products and services at the best price and lowest cost available.

With all of those challenges, it's important to understand the competitive position of the state in which you do business. Understanding what's happening in the state will help you guide your business through any situation.

From a state competitiveness perspective, here's what to look for:

1. Economic Climate - cost of doing business and overall state economy

2. Regulatory / Tax Environment - how tax and regs impact business

3. Employment Climate - workers comp costs, unemployment, insurance, etc.

4. Education / Worker Training - college and career prep

5. Quality of Life - how health and well-being ranks against other states

6. Infrastructure - condition of roads, bridges, etc.

7. Govt Policy - government spending and debt levels

Your state might score high or low on several of those factors. The key is to make sure you understand the true climate within the state, and build enough agility in your business to take advantage of those factors that are in your favor.

Let's dig a little deeper on economic climate, and understand the primary pieces.

1. Cost of doing business - wages, taxes, utilities, and real estate (purchase and lease)

2. Cost of living - food, utilities, transportation, and housing are the primary components

3. Income / Poverty - per capita income and poverty rates tell consumer spending capabilities

4. Exports - defines state production of various products - consumer, industrial, chemicals, etc.

5. Economic Growth - state gdp

6. Unemployment Rate - where is your state positioned versus others?

7. Business Incubation - venture capital, employer start-ups

8. Economic Mobility - are residents moving up, down or sideways economically?

9. Energy Costs - electric, natural gas, water costs

It's a rewarding and interesting exercise to study and understand where you state falls against others. If your small business has an opportunity for expansion outside the current state in which you do business, make sure you study these critical success factors.

Make sure to incorporate this analysis into your strategic planning, too. Not only can conditions within your state improve or worsen in a very short period of time, but your business must be equipped to respond quickly to these macro changes.

The macro environment, from the state to national and world economies, will impact your success. Understand their influences, and most importantly, identify what you can do take advantage of the structure in place.

Forecasting - A Tool for Small Business Success

Putting together a budget has left me feeling both satisfied and empty. When I was wearing my finance hat, I enjoyed seeing how all parts of the organization were putting together strategies and action plans to accomplish goals that would help grow the business.

The other positive was that as a finance team, we had a tangible output - a budget. We consolidated all the inputs from other departments, asked questions, challenged assumptions, performed what-if analysis, and put together a pretty package that was sent to the executive teams and department heads.

After the "high" of completing the budget, reality soon set in. In working with colleagues from other departments, I could see the budget package on a shelf, under a stack of papers, and in some cases, the budget wasn't to be found. Talk about a cold dose of reality.

Budgets will always have a place in business, but to increase their effectiveness, you have to incorporate forecasting into your business planning. The forecast helps take into consideration the changes that are happening in the business right now and those you expect to happen very soon.

A budget is static, and serves as a baseline. The forecast is evergreen - it changes each time you take a look at conditions, and provides you with the ability to make small gains in your business, hit a homerun, or protect your current position.

In volatile times, forecasting is an essential tool. Pull together your sales, marketing, and service and operations team. Ask them to take a look at the market, and analyze and develop a 4 quarter or 12 month rolling forecast. When you do this, you can optimize your investments, and pare back those that just won't cut it in the current market.

Along with the sales piece, review the expenses. When people have a budget, many will spend to the budget. It's human nature. Have your department heads or key leaders reevaluate their spending, and tie it back to the new direction that the forecast is dictating.

Budgeting is a baseline. From the CFO chair, it will always have a place in business. Drive innovation and resource optimization, you MUST do the forecast. Forecasting leads to agility - being quick on your feet to respond to threats, and take advantage of the opportunities that are right there.

With your business and the economy in a constant state of fluctuation, can you really afford to rely solely upon a static budget?
